Exhibitions / White
2008
This solo exhibition featured a series of six oil on linen paintings using semi-transparent layers of white painted shard-like forms to create multilayered fields. Most of the works were an extension or revision of one CAD form, where Bond originally laid out a composition of six triangles inside a rectangular box. Each of the white paintings took this ur-form and played with it, turning it upside down, mirroring it, twisting it, repeating it, and pulling it apart. The only work in the series that didn’t use this form was 'Shattered, 16 shards', which consisted of 16 falling shards of a shattered rectangle, like a broken sheet of glass. The works were more about process than anything else. The building up of layers was part of a meditative process where the forms gradually emerged over months from the raw linen ground that forms the background. Bond extended the edges of each form to wrap around the side stretchers, which gave the works an illusion of further dimension. Alongside the white paintings were the nine 'Flesh and Blood' painted books, originally shown at the ACCA New08 exhibition earlier in 2008. These were displayed vertically in individual cases.
